Technical Cooperation Project – Adaptation and development of structure optimization and energy-saving climate control techniques for greenhouse vegetable production

Labex Korea – Brazil is the largest tropical country in the world and, as such, there is a great climatic and soil variability along its territory. Although protected horticultural production is practiced from southern subtropical Rio Grande do Sul to northern tropical Amazonia, the reasons why protected agriculture practices are adopted differ widely.   A growing interest in producing vegetables under protection is associated with the increasing income and urbanization of Brazilian population and the general concern with more secure food, the need to decrease the use of chemical pesticides and increase the efficiency of water and fertilizer use.

There is no public-funded research in Brazil dealing with greenhouse structure optimization for the different climatic conditions in the country. Such knowledge is necessary if one wants to make greenhouse cultivation more efficient, to avoid the use of structures not adapted to specific regional conditions or to specific uses. One of the main problems experienced by greenhouse horticulture in Brazilian tropical areas is the lack of temperature control inside greenhouses and excessive heat during most part of the year. Temperature control techniques are badly needed, but the monetary cost of production should not increase too much because the relatively low consumption of vegetables by average Brazilians could be further compromised.

 This Technical Cooperation Project (TCP) between Embrapa and RDA is centered in sharing of information of interest to both countries. The objectives of it are: a) Training Brazilian researchers on research techniques on greenhouse structure optimization and internal climate control and monitoring; and b) Developing techniques of structure optimization and internal climate control of greenhouses adapted to Brazilian conditions.
