International initiative seeks to reconcile agriculture with sustainability

40Avicultura Industrial – A group of 25 scientists of the world will have two years to do research and report a concrete experiences to balance the sustainable agricultural production to ensure worldwide food security. The initiative, launched in Rio, aims to unite researchers, governments and companies around the common goals. According Emile Frison, General Director of the Bioversity International, a nonprofit research organization headquartered in Rome, who leads the project, the novelty of Agriculture and Conservation Initiative is the union between researchers of the sustainability and of the productive sectors to fetch integrated solutions.

Wireless system assesses welfare of chickens during slaughter

39Avicultura Industrial – The Laboratory of Applied Physics and Computational College of Animal Science and Food Engineering (FZEA) USP has developed a methodology using a wireless system (wireless network) that allows measuring the brain state of broilers during the slaughter process. The technology aims to establish a procedure for equivalence in relation to the requirements of the European Union (EU) the welfare of the birds during slaughter demonstrating, through EEG (Eletroenceéfalograma), the animal is unconscious and does not suffer in the process.

Growers race to save orange from spreading disease

MSN News – Increasingly, orange growers have come to believe that genetic engineering holds the only hope for developing a tree that is resistant to an incurable citrus disease.

Botanical Institute discovers seven species of fungi in Paranapiacaba

Agência FAPESP – Conservative estimates put the total number of fungal species in the world at 1.5 million. Although many remain unknown, new studies in the field of mycology are increasing the knowledge on this kingdom every year. Researchers from the São Paulo Environment Secretariat’s Botanical Institute (IBt/SP) have been contributing to these efforts and have just discovered seven new species on the Paranapiacaba Biological Reserve (RBP) in Greater São Paulo.

A new use for rice — lithium ion batteries

1Researchers in Korea report that rice husks — the tough, protective layer covering a rice kernel — are ideal sources of silicon for high-capacity lithium battery anodes. Their findings are published in PNAS Early Edition.

Husks protect rice kernels from bacteria and insects, while allowing air and moisture to penetrate through tiny pores in layers of silica. This three dimensional structure maintained its shape even as the researchers processed the silica husks into purified silicon.

Will Changes to Poultry Meat Inspection Improve Global Standards?

34The Poultry Site – In Europe, last year, the European Food Safety Authority published an opinion on the existing inspection procedures in poultry slaughterhouses and came to the conclusion that the simple visual inspection was not sufficient in times when concerns over pathogens such as Salmonella and Campylobacter were rising. The accent it concluded was for a more “whole chain” approach to inspection.

EFSA called for the introduction of a comprehensive food safety assurance system, including clear targets for what should be achieved in poultry carcases and, where appropriate, with respect to a particular hazard for poultry flocks.

The authority also recommended the use of a variety of control options for the main hazards, both on the farm and at the abattoir, in order to meet these targets. >>Continue Reading<<
