III Workshop Embrapa (Brazil) and Korea (RDA)

Labex Korea (Embrapa) and the International Technology Cooperation Center (ITCC/RDA) are organizing the III Workshop RDA/Embrapa to be held in Suwon on March 25 – 29. This event is being proposed with the objective to establish strategies for cooperation between both Institutions to toward technological innovations through research, development and technology transfer, which enable to boost the agricultural sector in both countries.

Microalgae oil can turn biofuel

etanol_1Biomassa & Bioenergia – A project developed by the Agronomic Institute of Paraná (Iapar), with the support of Companhia Paranaense de Energia (Copel), seeks viability of cultivation of microalgae to produce biodiesel from oil extracted from aquatic microorganism that can also generate other substances of commercial interest.
According to the researcher Diva de Souza Andrade, cultivation of microalgae has several interesting features: relatively low costs for harvesting and transportation and lower water usage compared to cultivation of other plants. Continue reading

Simple Physics May Limit the Size of Leaves

ScienceNOW – Leaf growth may not be as complicated as it seems. When compared, species to species, shorter trees exhibit a greater variety of leaf sizes than taller ones, with the tallest trees all having leaves that measure 10 to 20 centimeters in length, a biophysicist and a biologist report. The narrow size range may have a simple explanation in the inner plumbing of trees, they say. If it’s correct, the analysis would also explain why the tallest trees top out at about 100 meters.
