Biomass&Bioenergy – The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, launched an initiative to designate 2012 as the International Year Renewable Sustainable Energy for everybody, with goals to achieve it till 2030.
During the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Ban called governments, private sector and civil society to actively supporting the idea. “This is the moment for this initiative,” he said.
The plan has three objectives: ensuring universal access to modern energy services, double the rate of implementation of the fuel efficiency, double the proportion of renewable energy in global energy matrix.
The Secretary-General of UN has appointed a “high level group of [representatives] of business, finance, government and civil society to lead the initiative.”
“It is neither fair nor sustainable that one in every five people still do not has access to modern electricity,” Ban told the conference.
“It is unacceptable that three billion people still need to timber, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heating,” he said.
