Online Resource: A Tool to Help Implement the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

Bioversity International has developed a learning tool for improving knowledge and skills to implement the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and to use The Treaty’s standard material transfer agreement (SMTA).   See below more information and the links to access this Learning Module:

“The module is targeted to genebank managers and technical advisers to policymakers and can also be used for education. By the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the significance of the Treaty and its main elements
  • Explain the relationship of the Treaty to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
  • Identify which regime of access and benefit sharing will apply to individual cases of germplasm accession
  • Understand the process of implementation of the Treaty and its multilateral system of access and benefit-sharing at the national level
  • Understand and use the standard material transfer agreement (SMTA)

The content is designed for a 2-day, face to face workshop, but the materials may also be used separately for a shorter workshop or to support classroom teaching.

Contents

The module contains background lecture notes, PowerPoint presentations, practical exercises to reinforce an understanding of the impact and working of International Treaty law in the types of situations that professionals in plant genetic resources can expect to face, references to the full-text of relevant laws and policies and a bibliography for further reading. The module also contains complete Information for Trainers, with templates, tips, and step-by-step guidelines for delivering a successful training workshop.”
